History Of Chelation Therapy
This page provides the only background and history of the term "chelation therapy" to be found on the web. The phrase is "oral chelation" or "oral chelation therapy" or "chelation therapy." When the term "I/V" is added to these words, that refers to the medical procedure (needle in the arm, done by a doctor). When these words are used without the "I/V" they normally refer to a vitamin formula based on the amino acid cysteine.

The term "oral chelation" is defined by taking each word separately, below. The History of this name and this product is further below.

The term "oral" simply refers to "mouth." When you take something "orally," you take it into the mouth. Normally the word would not relate to "drinking" or sucking through a straw, but you get the idea. Into your mouth. |
This word can be contrasted with "intravenous" which is a word that means that something enters your body through a vein rather than through your mouth.

"Intravenous" actions are generally done by a doctor or a nurse who sticks a needle in a vein, often in your wrist. The needle wouldn't look like the picture, but you get the idea. |

The needle is connected to a long tube which, in turn, is connected to a bottle of some medication that is slowly "dripped" into your body through the tube, needle and vein. The word "dripped" is usually used because part of the mechanism of measuring the amount of stuff to go into your body is a part of the tube where the medication "drips" and you can see the number of drops and thus estimate the speed of flow.
So, when you take something orally, you take it into your mouth.
You normally take vitamin tablets orally -- you simply put them in your mouth, with water, and swallow.

The word "chelation" starts with the Greek Root of this word -- chele. Chele, in Greek, means the claw part of a crab or lobster. So, "chele" refers to a grabbing action. |
When you add the rest of those letters, getting "chelation" you simply have a word that means the "grabbing action" of some substance.
You can then put together the two words "intravenous" and "chelation" and you have "intravenous chelation" therapy, which is a slow drip of some substance, into the body, which grabs ahold of something in the body. What is being grabbed is dependant upon the substance being inserted into the body.
Intravenous Chelation Therapy is a modern medical procedure offered by more than 1,000 doctors in the United States. Since it involves a needle in the vein, only a nurse or doctor can do it. Since it involves putting a substance INTO your body, only a doctor can initiate the process. Once a doctor decides that it's OK for you to have this procedure, a nurse might be the only one you see -- as she has authority to stick the needle into you.
One of the pioneers in this practice was my friend Dr. Ray Evers. He won a great court battle many years ago -- fighting the government and various medical boards. The government didn't want to see intravenous chelation therapy being done -- it cuts into the profits of the drug companies. So, they constantly attacked any doctor who did it. Many courageous doctors did it, anyway, and many of them lost their licenses. Dr. Evers realized that when a person had "lead poisoning" the standardly-accepted treatment was intravenous treatment with EDTA. In other words, the same exact substance and the same exact procedure were used to treat lead poisoning as was being used to improve blood circulation.
EDTA is well recognized for getting rid of lead poisoning. As EDTA can remove lead, it also removes other "heavy metals," including, of course, any of those metals which happen to be toxic. Here is an encyclopedia comment on lead which includes reference to getting rid of lead from the body with EDTA:
Lead
Lead, symbol Pb, dense, bluish-gray metallic element with an atomic number of 82 and an atomic weight of 207.20. Lead occurs naturally in eight isotopic forms, of which four are stable and four radioactive. Three stable isotopes— lead-206, lead-207, and lead-208— are, respectively, the end products of the uranium, actinium, and thorium series of radioactive decay; lead-204, also stable, has no natural radioactive precursors (see Radioactivity).
Lead occurs worldwide in the ore galena. The principal method of extracting lead from galena is to convert it to the oxide, which is then reduced in a blast furnace (see Metallurgy). Because galena often has other minerals associated with it, the crude lead, or pig lead, obtained from the smelting process, contains copper, zinc, silver, and gold as impurities. The recovery of these precious metals is often as important economically as the production of lead itself.
Lead is used in storage batteries and in sheathing electric cables. It is used in industry to line pipes, tanks, and X-ray apparatus. Because of its high density and nuclear properties, lead is used extensively as protective shielding for radioactive material.
Basic lead carbonate, called white lead, has long been used as a white pigment and is also used in ceramic glazes. In recent years, because of the dangers of lead poisoning, the interior use of lead-based paints has largely been discontinued. Red lead, or minium, a scarlet, crystalline powder, is the pigment in the protective paint for structural ironwork and steelwork.
Lead taken internally in any of its forms is highly toxic; the effects are usually felt after it has accumulated in the body over time. Symptoms of lead poisoning are anemia, weakness, constipation, colic, palsy, and often paralyzed wrists and ankles. Flaking lead-based paints and toys made from lead compounds are serious hazards for children. Lead can reduce intelligence, delay motor development, impair memory, and cause problems with balance and hearing. Lead poisoning is treated with calcium disodium ethylenediaminetetraacidic acid, or EDTA, an agent that removes lead from the body.
In fact, some doctors, in those early years, would get around the legal attacks by claiming that their patient had lead poisoning when, in fact, there was no evidence of that -- but there was evidence of poor blood circulation.
So, Dr. Evers administered EDTA to improve blood circulation and when he was attacked, he went into court. Eventually he got a landmark decision which gave doctors the freedom to use ANY approved substance in a way which the doctor felt, per his training, was appropriate. In other words, since EDTA was approved for lead poisoning, the government would not be allowed to "second-guess" the doctor's diagnosis -- and the doctor could use it without defending WHY he was using it.
This all depended, of course, on the EDTA being approved, in the first place, for the treatment of lead poisoning.
Since EDTA has been so-approved for many decades, you would think that the intravenous chelation doctors were, finally, safe. But, they still get attacked for various reasons.
The drug companies really don't want to see this therapy used -- because heart drugs represent many billions of dollars of profits to them, and the government is very much the handmaiden of the drug companies when it comes to health care in America.
Now, let's get back to this intravenous chelation therapy, and how it works.

EDTA has a chemical and physical characteristic that it is attracted to heavy particles. It is not quite like a magnetic attraction, but in any event when there is EDTA in your blood stream, and some heavy particle (such as a particle of lead, mercury, iron, etc.) the EDTA and the heavy particle come together such that the heavy particle is coated with the EDTA.
Now, since the EDTA is an artificial amino acid, and since the body regards it as a foreign substance, the body eliminates the entire particle -- the heavy particle coated with EDTA. The body can't tell that underneath the coating is some material (iron mixed with carbon, perhaps) which the body might be willing to keep even though it is harmful to the body. So, this coated particle (EDTA coated over some heavy particle) gets sent to the kidney and you urinate it out into the toilet.
You just got rid of some heavy particles. Since the most numerous heavy particles in the body are toxic metals, such as toxic iron, toxic mercury, toxic lead, etc., what intravenous chelation therapy does for you is to get rid of the toxic metals inside your body.

So, there you have intravenous chelation therapy.
The term "oral chelation" then, simply means that you take some substance different from EDTA into the mouth -- a substance which will be absorbed into the body and which also grabs ahold of toxic metals and helps the body get rid of them.
Lo! and Behold! The amino acid cysteine does just that.

Cysteine is a common and very useful amino acid. The yolk of one egg contains about 250 milligrams of cysteine. |
But, when you eat an egg all that cysteine is nicely balanced with all the other essential amino acids in the egg, and the body uses all of them as building blocks. The amino acids are the components of all the structure in the body -- the bones, flesh, organs, hair, etc. Each of these components has its own composition of different amino acids.
So, eating eggs doesn't give you "free form" cysteine inside your body.
That "grabbing" process I mentioned, by cysteine, ONLY works when there is so much cysteine in your blood that there is too much to be used to build organs, bones, etc.
So, if you take about 100 milligrams of cysteine, as an oral supplement, it is worthless as far as chelation is concerned. You need to take enough so that the first hunk of it can be used to combine with the other available amino acids to build structure, and the remainder is then free (free form) to act as a separate amino acid.
The Vibrant Life oral chelation formula (Life Glow Plus) contains 300 milligrams of cysteine, and 300 mg of N Acetyl Cysteine; and that is plenty to give you a good quantity in the blood stream, to do that grabbing of toxic metals.
So, "oral chelation" is simply a term that describes a vitamin formula which will grab ahold of toxic metals in your body and get rid of them. Again, why you should want to get rid of toxic metals is covered elsewhere.
When you take a large amount of cysteine, such as 1,000 milligrams, there is the problem that it can be used by the body to build kidney stones. The solution for this is simply to add in about 4 or 5 times as much Vitamin C as there is cysteine.
So, if a formula has 1,000 milligrams, then, like Life Glow, it must have about 4,500 milligrams of Vitamin C.
There is also the problem that cysteine can be converted inside the body to another harmful substance (homocysteine) but that too is easily handled by a few of the B Vitamins.
All in all it is necessary to have a large number of "balancing" vitamins when you design a formula high in cysteine. Cysteine is well researched as to its ability to perform the chelating function I've described above. The history of the product called oral chelation" starts with Dr. Kurt Donsbach, the President of the National Health Federation back in 1975 or so. |

He would use his prestige and position to lecture about the oral chelation concept, and, of course, he was also selling the formula. But, it worked! He got himself on the radio, talking about heart problems and blood circulation, and started selling this stuff all over the United States -- in very large quantities.

Then many other companies copied his formula, either completely, or partially, and pretty soon there were more than 20 companies each offering an oral chelation formula -- all using pretty much the same formula -- all based on cysteine. |
Many of them were MLM companies. MLM companies have a tradition of doing well with a product which requires a lot of consumer education, and where the selling price can be high enough to cover the very high costs of MLM marketing.
This is STILL a product which you will hardly ever find in a health food store -- because it is so expensive that it won't sell "by itself," and because very few health food store clerks can take the time, or know enough, to educate a customer.
Royal Nutrition was one of those MLM companies -- with a formula that was very similar to that sold by Dr. Donsbach.
Back in those days the intravenous chelation doctors didn't much like the vitamin people pushing in on their territory, but it's interesting to note that the medical doctors offering intravenous chelation therapy didn't really understand their own process -- they had a completely false explanation of why it worked. Check out the mechanics of how both of these work.
So, I don't think Dr. Donsbach (a chiropractor by training) understood the theory of oral chelation either. I heard him lecture about it several times and was inspired to get into the business myself, because of him.
Both the intravenous and the oral chelation people were claiming that your blood circulation was reduced because of a build-up of calcium on the inside of the arteries. Then they claimed that the chelation process (either I/V or oral) would be like a "rooter rooter," and chip away that plaque (made of calcium).
With the calcium removed, the arteries would become flexible again, and the passage would be larger -- thus more blood would flow.
It's funny that both the I/V and the oral approach WORKED, but not for the reasons being given. The IV chelation was so successful that some doctors who should have known better would tell you that you had "lead poisoning" just so they could treat you. You see (as explained above) the intravenous chelation was completely accepted as the remedy for removing toxic lead from the body, but the FDA claimed it would be a fraud to use the same process to remove calcium.
Interestingly, the FDA was right, but at the time everyone thought the FDA was just being its usually nasty self.
The people who got into chelation, whether doctors with I/V, or pill pushers with oral, KNEW that it worked, but didn't know why. They grabbed onto the first reasonable reason they could find, and then eagerness pushed ignorance into a very strong statement of "fact."

As the years went by these twenty different companies, many of the MLM companies, were all selling very much the same formula. Even the prices were pretty much the same.
Vibrant Life was created originally to sell Amway vitamins, but then changed its emphasis for Jean Ross and Karl Loren to make a go of it with Royal Nutrition. They could sell the vitamins, but couldn't do very well building a group of dedicated distributors.

Finally, in frustration, they decided to explore getting a laboratory to make the formula for them -- with different quantities and some different ingredients so they could claim that their product was different from the others. |
It was easy to make it "different." When you study the cost of making an oral chelation formula you quickly find that even though there are more than 40 ingredients, three of them account for almost 50% of the entire cost of manufacturing the formula.
Well, it was obvious and easy for those companies which wanted to sell their product cheaper than the competition -- all they had to do was reduce the quantity of one of these three very expensive ingredients. Then they would claim that these ingredients were not so important anyway!
Not all the dishonest people have medical degrees!
It was fascinating!
Vibrant Life, instead, asked the laboratory how the formula could be made BETTER, not cheaper.
The key was in the main ingredient -- the amino acid cysteine. The original Donsbach formula had 500 milligrams in the daily dosage, and Vibrant Life, researching cysteine, decided that 750 was a much better dose.
So, Vibrant Life came out with a new product, called Life Flow (the product is now called Life Glow), with 750 milligrams of cysteine in it. The current product, Life Glow, contains 1,000 milligrams per day of cysteine.

Jean and Karl started traveling! Jean Ross and Karl Loren (husband and wife) went around the Southwest US. Karl would give a lecture on heart disease and Jean would sell bottles. This continued for a while when Karl's lecture had been given so often that he got very good at it, and recorded it. |
That recorded cassette tape explained heart disease so clearly, and explained oral chelation so convincingly, that Jean and Karl soon found that they could sell bottles of vitamins by advertising, sending that tape out, and then handling the vitamin orders by mail.
And so the mail order business was launched.
About that time the Food And Drug Administration swooped down on Dr. Donsbach. They accused him of making medical claims for a substance (the vitamin formula) which was not licensed as a drug.
You realize, I suppose, that it is illegal to cure or prevent a disease with anything other than a drug approved by the FDA. The law was changed in 1994 to make it much easier for vitamin companies to make claims. Here is a quote from an FDA description of the new 1994 law, the "DSHEA" (Dietary Supplements and Health Education Act of 1994):
The DSHEA provides for the use of various types of statements on the label of dietary supplements, although claims may not be made about the use of a dietary supplement to diagnose, prevent, mitigate, treat, or cure a specific disease (unless approved under the new drug provisions of the FD&C Act). For example, a product may not carry the claim "cures cancer" or "treats arthritis." Appropriate health claims authorized by FDA--such as the claim linking folic acid and reduce risk of neural tube birth defects and the claim that calcium may reduce the risk of osteoporosis--may be made in supplement labeling if the product qualifies to bear the claim. Under DSHEA, firms can make statements about classical nutrient deficiency diseases--as long as these statements disclose the prevalence of the disease in the United States. In addition, manufacturers may describe the supplement's effects on "structure or function" of the body or the "well-being" achieved by consuming the dietary ingredient. To use these claims, manufacturers must have substantiation that the statements are truthful and not misleading and the product label must bear the statement "This statement has not been evaluated by the Food and Drug Administration. This product is not intended to diagnose, treat, cure, or prevent any disease." Unlike health claims, nutritional support statements need not be approved by FDA before manufacturers market products bearing the statements, however, the agency must be notified no later than 30 days after a product that bears the claim is first marketed. Technically, if you offer Vitamin C for sale, and claim that it will prevent your catching cold, or curing a cold, you could go to jail.
The law enforcement has gotten a bit relaxed and the FDA is less nasty today than they were 15 years ago. But, they swooped down on Dr. Donsbach and put him out of business.
There were these other 20 companies still selling oral chelation products, but probably all twenty of them, in total, didn't sell as much as Dr. Donsbach. So, the FDA eliminated about 50% of the total sales of oral chelation, in one swoop, putting Dr. Donsbach out of business.
The other 20 companies, including Vibrant Life, watched and worried!
Believe it or not, 19 of those companies ALSO were raided by the FDA, and put out of business. There were some very special reasons why Vibrant Life did NOT get put out of business. When you visit with Jean Ross, in person, she'll tell you that story. But, Vibrant Life continued to sell oral chelation vitamins after ALL those other companies were closed down.
For more than ten years there was ONLY Vibrant Life selling an oral chelation formula.
Before they were raided by the FDA, some other companies copied Vibrant Life's formula, even including the 750 milligrams of cysteine. (Since then, with N Acetyl Cysteine added, the amount of "regular" Cysteine could be reduced.) So, Vibrant Life researched the subject thoroughly and found that the formula would be even better with more cysteine. The formula was changed to add more of several of the ingredients, and the name was changed to Life Glow, then changed again, and changed to Life Glow Plus. The formula, but not the name, has later been changed one more time to add three more ingredients.
No other company has followed the Vibrant Life lead, so far, by increasing the quantity of the important ingredients.
The success of the Life Glow Plus formula could never have depended on promotion and sales claims -- but only on real results. Vibrant Life has thousands of customers who have continued to buy Life Glow year Plus after year -- despite its relatively high cost.
