agnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI) has
lifted the science of diagnostic radiology to
new heights. Advanced computer technology
supports MRI and allows the radiologists to
detect subtle ab
normalities
not able to be seen in the past or by other
imaging modalities. In 1985, Advanced
Radiology pioneered the field of MRI by being
the first medical institution to offer MRI in
the Greater Baltimore area. In 1996, Advanced
Radiology welcomed the highest field strength
OPEN MRI Scanners to the practice. This
offers patients with special needs the
opportunity to receive the highest quality
MRI images available in a comfortable and
relaxed environment. Our specialized training
and extensive experience in this new field
enable us to give our patients the best
possible diagnostic expertise.
OW DOES IT WORK?
The examination does not involve X-ray
radiation or radio-active material and
requires virtually no
preparation. Imaging is based on
interactions between the magnetic field of a
large magnet and the atoms within your body.
Timed pulses or radio waves are emitted
within the magnet. Returning signals from the
body are received in the form of radio waves
detected by an antenna inside the magnet. A
specifically designed computer converts these
signals into a visible image in one or more
of your body's anatomic planes.
HAT HAPPENS DURING AN EXAM?
During the scan you will lie awake on a
contoured couch which slides into the
doughnut-shaped magnet. With the unique
configurations of our OPEN MRI units, you
will not be in a completely enclosed area,
since the scanner is open on both sides.
Nothing will touch your body, and you will
feel no strange sensations or pain. Blankets
may be provided to keep you warm as the
magnet and computers require a cooler
temperature than may be normally comfortable
to you. A two-way intercom will be provided
so that you may communicate with the
technologist at the control at all times. You
will be observed by the technologist on
closed-circuit television. For your
entertainment, headphones with your choice of
radio stations or music are available at many
offices.
The
entire examination should take less than one
hour. The actual scanning occurs during only
a part of this time. It is important to
remain absolutely still and relaxed while in
the magnet. You will hear a loud knocking
noise inside the magnet which will indicate
when the scans are actually being made. The
noise is monotonous and may put you to sleep.
This is perfectly alright. Since there is no
radiation involved in MRI, you may bring a
friend or family member into the scanning
room with you to keep you company.
S
IT SAFE?
YES! There are no adverse reactions to the
magnetic resonance scans at the levels used.
The Federal Drug Administration (FDA) has
approved our scanners as safe. No Ionizing
radiation (X-Ray) is used. The procedure is
safe for those patients allergic to iodinated
radiography contrast agents.
HAT
CAN IT TELL?
The
magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) examination
maps the soft tissues of the body with
exquisite detail. It is helpful in the
diagnostic evaluation of the head, chest,
heart, abdomen, extremities, and other body
systems. The brain and spinal cord are
especially well seen by MRI. Differentiation
between gray and white matter of the brain is
easy with MRI, as is the demonstration of
swelling and demyelination (multiple
sclerosis, etc.). The test may help answer
problems which are difficult or impossible to
solve by other imaging methods. In many
cases, the information gathered enhances and
complements the results obtained by
computerized tomography (CT) and
ultrasound examinations.
HAT HAPPENS AFTER I AM FINISHED?
All images will be reviewed by a
board-certified radiologist. A report of
the results will be sent to your physician.
Your doctor may also be sent copies of
pertinent scan sections. Of course, urgent
findings will be called in immediately.
