This urine test is performed by collecting urine immediately after taking a capsule of the metal chelator, DMSA. DMSA (2,3-dimercaptosuccinic acid) is a chelator of mercury. It binds to mercury in tissues throughout the body and carries this mercury out through the kidneys in the urine. The amount of mercury in the urine is directly proportional to the total mercury burden in the body. Unlike other chelators, DMSA also removes mercury from the brain where it is most toxic.
