Cholesterol [chole+ Gr. stereos solid] 1. a A pearly, fat-like steroid alcohol, C27H45OH, crystallizing in the form of leaflets or plates from dilute alcohol, and found in animal fats and oils, bile, blood, brain tissue, milk, yolk of eggs, myelin sheaths of nerve fibers, the liver, kidneys, and adrenal glands. It constitutes a large part of the most frequently occurring type of gallstones and occurs in the atheroma of the arteries, in various cysts, and in carcinomatous tissue. Most of the body's cholesterol is synthesized in the liver, but some is absorbed from the diet. It is a precursor of bile acids and is important in the synthesis of steroid hormones.
[Karl Note: Generally the earlier is the source of information the less it has been corrupted by "modern medicine." Note that the Funk & Wagnalls Dictionary, above, from 1894, does NOT include any reference to cholesterin having any pathologic relationship with the arteries. By 1981, the definition of "cholesterol" has already included reference to "atheromas" in the arteries. Doctors, of course, would say that new investigations have uncovered these relationships, while some others still allege that these "new investigations" were fraudulent -- designed primarily to sell drugs.]
What is Cholesterin?Cholesterine, also as Cholesterol designation, are hydraulicaromatic hydrocarbons. Cholesterine are manufactured by the human organism. In addition, Cholesterine are supplied from the outside by way of the food. It is to point thereupon that Cholesterine are in vegetable missing only in animal food however. With a healthy adult humans are supplied about 34% the Cholesterine with the food and 66% by the organism are manufactured.
Cholesterine serve the structure of Steroidhormonen with humans such as Oestrogenen, Gestagenen and androgens. Further it serves bile acid production in the liver and the structure of new fabrics. Cholesterin is surrounded in the blood by a covering from Lipoproteinen. |
What is cholesterol?
Source
Cholesterol is a fatty substance (a
lipid) that is an important part of the outer
lining (membrane) of cells in the body of
animals.
Cholesterol is also found in the blood
circulation of humans. The
cholesterol in a person’s blood
originates from two major sources, dietary
intake and liver production. Dietary
cholesterol comes mainly from meat,
poultry, fish, and dairy products. Organ
meats, such as liver, are especially high in
cholesterol content, while foods of
plant origin contain no
cholesterol. After a meal,
cholesterol is absorbed by the
intestines into the blood circulation and is
then packaged inside a protein coat. This
cholesterol-protein coat complex is called a
chylomicron.
The liver is capable of removing cholesterol from the blood circulation as well as manufacturing cholesterol and secreting cholesterol into the blood circulation. After a meal, the liver removes chylomicrons from the blood circulation. In between meals, the liver manufactures and secretes cholesterol back into the blood circulation.
CHOLESTEROL - an important basic material for making hormones, for synthesizing vitamin D, and for building cell membranes.
Some of the hormones made by your body from cholesterol have crucial roles in body chemistry. Almost 10% of the dry weight of the brain tissue is cholesterol. It is so essential to nutrition that the liver and brain synthesize about 1.5 grams a day to insure you get enough.
If you overindulge in cholesterol rich foods such as eggs, synthesis in the liver shuts down.
However, the brain must have this material at all times, thus cholesterol synthesis in the brain goes on continuously.
The link between dietary cholesterol and heart disease is fairly weak, while the real connection with heart disease comes from saturated fats.
[Karl Note: The above paragraph is false data! There is a tremendous amount of false data on this subject of cholesterol.]
Since dietary cholesterol in animal foods usually exists with cholesterol, cholesterol gets blamed for things it does not cause. In the transport of cholesterol from the liver to the arteries it is not the cholesterol that forms the thick, clogging plaque deposits, but the saturated fats you eat.
[Karl Note: More false data. The "plaque" is, first of all, NOT a coating on the inside wall of the artery, but rather an excessive amount of calcium INSIDE individual cells. It is amazing how hard it is to find an honest definition even for this very basic substance, so plentiful in our food and in our bodies. I have a major article on "plaque" -- click here.]
