The Main Article on this subject of Detoxification includes the following paragraph.
These toxins are NOT removed with my oral chelation therapy. Until the Hubbard Detoxification program was developed no one had even yet recognized that these oil soluble toxins had such long-term dangers, not only for the individual, but for the groups in which these people lived and worked. When and as you look for "detoxification programs" on the internet you'll find gobs of them, with practically none of them acknowledging the vital central significance of toxins being stored in fatty tissues. Until you recognize that fact of life, you can't develop a procedure for removing THOSE toxins from THAT location. (source)
This page brings you a collection of references to web sites which ranked very high on a Google search engine search based on "detoxification" or "detoxification program." Some of these detoxification protocols are downright harmful. An important characteristic of the Hubbard Detoxification program, for instance, is the use of niacin. Niacin has the well-known characteristic of causing "vasodilation" -- often called a flush -- that is, an opening of the small blood vessels (capillaries) so that more blood flows through them. These are the blood vessels that are most of value in reaching areas of fatty tissue. In this way the toxins that are stored in these fatty tissues can be removed, into the blood stream, and processed out of the body. However, niacin, vitamin B3, also is made in the form of niacinamide -- a "form" of Vitamin B3 which, deliberately, is created so that it will NOT cause dilation of the blood vessels -- the "flush" so well known when using plain niacin. A detoxification program that features the use of niacinamide and also claims to improve blood circulation would be based on false science. Click here for such a program.
Other detoxification programs, listed on this page, don't even recognize that the toxins they claim to be removing are stored in fatty tissues. The idea of removing these toxins by some procedure that does NOT include niacin is not practical.

No Mention of toxins stored in fatty tissue

Detoxification is a crucial aspect of our quest for health. Due to the ever-increasing amount of chemicals in our world today, the resulting toxins accumulate in our bodies, weaken the organs, and lead to illness. The toxins come from pesticide and chemical residues in our food, air and water. The digestive system especially suffers from these toxins - struggling to overcome bacterial imbalances in the intestinal tract which release toxic byproducts into our circulation, thus internally polluting the body. To battle this growing problem our physicians have devised several methods which aim to reopen the drainage pathways, cleanse the toxins, and repair the damage.
[Karl Note: Through a private communication to me, "Karen" went through the detoxification program offered by this medical group and reported that the protocol used niacinamide, not niacin. In the list of vitamins and other substances suggested by this group, niacinamide is listed, but NOT niacin.
This medical group also includes the following offered service:
Alchemical Herbology is used to investigate and put into modern practice the ancient art of alchemy. In order to create a complete holistic spagyric pharmacy, we have designed a three-layered system for the manufacture and use of our preparations, following the classic three-level system of the ancient alchemists.

The Growing Problem Of Toxicity
Brief Description of the Condition:
Toxins exist everywhere and can lead to serious health problems. They are in food and the environment, and persist because of our insufficient metabolic ability to rid the body of all that we are exposed to on a daily basis. They can drain the body of energy and make you more susceptible to disease and infection. Toxins tend to concentrate in the liver and gastrointestinal tract, both places responsible for eliminating toxins from the body. Since everyone is exposed to toxins, everyone can use a detoxification treatment on a regular basis.

The more toxic we are, the faster we age. "Everyone needs detoxification," says Susan Lombardi, founder and president of the We Care Health Center in Palm Springs, California, and author of Ten Easy Steps for Complete Wellness. "I am vegetarian, and I take care of myself. Do I still need detoxification? Yes, because the air that we breathe is polluted, the water that we drink is full of chlorine, the clothing we wear is made of artificial fabrics and chemicals, the lotions and shampoos that we use all contain chemicals. Once these chemicals are inside us, we never fully eliminate them unless we go through a detoxification procedure." Lombardi recommends rejuvenating the system from the inside out by limiting food intake to fresh raw vegetable juices once a week, along with the following simple, yet effective, detoxification therapies:
JUICE FASTING
Juice fasting gives the digestive system a rest and speeds up the growth of new cells, which promotes healing. (If you have any medical problems, do not fast without medical approval and supervision.) On a juice fast, a person abstains from solid foods and drinks juice, water, and herbal teas throughout the day. "We should be drinking every half hour to an hour," advises Lombardi. "If we go for long periods of time without drinking anything, then a little glass of juice will not be able to sustain us. But if we are constantly drinking, the day will go by very smoothly."
Lombardi recommends a combination of the following:
CARROT JUICE. High in the antioxidant beta carotene and full of wonder enzymes.
CELERY JUICE. HIGH IN SODIUM -- not the artificial type poured from the salt shaker, which is bad for you, but the good, natural kind that promotes tissue flexibility.
BEET JUICE. Beets nourish the liver, one of the most important organs in the body, with hundreds of different functions. If your liver is functioning well, most likely everything else in your body will be too.
CABBAGE JUICE. Cabbage juice is high in vitamin C.
Mix the juice from each vegetable in equal proportion and drink this combination throughout the day. A little cayenne, which increases circulation, sending blood to every corner of the body to promote healing, can be added for flavor. Lemon juice in water and different herbal teas -- some good ones are parsley and dandelion tea for the liver and kidneys and pau d'arco for blood purification -- can be added for variety. "Any herbal tea free of caffeine will be good," Lombardi says. "Since you need to drink on an hourly basis, you don't want to drink the same thing over and over."
This highly rated web site denies that the toxin problem even exists!
It's an irrational concept, yet an intriguing idea, that modern life so fills us with poisons from polluted air and food additives that we need to be periodically "cleaned out" ("detoxified"). Never mind that natural chemicals in our foods are thousands of times more potent than additives, or that most Americans are healthier, live longer, and can choose from the most healthful food supply ever available.
The elaborate, manipulative hoax of "detoxification" is gaining ground. Many people sincerely believe that their intestines, colon, and blood stream are subject to "clogging" by undigested foods and poisons. Food faddists seem to have a special fascination with bowels, colons, and body wastes.)
The supposed need to detox is promoted through extensive writings, advertisements and door-to-door pitches. This usually involves fasting several times a year for a few days while taking laxatives or diuretics to "clean out the system."
Some entrepreneurs claim that detoxing is a great way to jump-start a diet by losing 5 or 10 pounds before you even begin the diet itself. And if their scheme is not about weight loss, "rejuvenation" is typically recommended afterward. People who are persuaded that these activities will restore vigorous youth can wind up hooked on an herbal regimen that costs several hundred dollars a month.
In the "Inches Away plan," the client eats no solid food for three days, drinks only water with lemon juice and honey added, and takes three kinds of herbal capsules. This is claimed to cleanse the digestive tract of accumulated waste and putrefied bacteria, clean out the major organs and blood, and give mental clarity because it stops the mind's bombardment by chemicals and food additives. After three days of detox, the client takes four kinds of diet pills in combination, up to 30 a day, and visits the diet center for weekly body wraps and daily simulated action on 10 passive exercise tables.
In the Sambu Internal Cleansing Program, "Dr. Dunner of Switzerland" advises detoxing by drinking a special tea with pills that combine elderberries and birch-juniper.
The Herbal Cleansing and Detox Program from the Indiana Botanic Gardens of Hammond, Ind., includes a tea and tablets containing ginger, prickly ash, yellow dock, cascara sagrada, psyllium and uva ursi. "With your body free of harmful toxins, you will feel younger, better, healthier and happier!" Claimed benefits are increased energy, better digestion, normal weight maintenance, clearer complexion, good circulation, mental alertness, balanced function of vital cleansing organs, and stronger defense system. (Cost for a supply of tea and tablets is $29.90.)
The Health Center for Better Living of Naples, Fla., promotes Colon Helper and an amusing theory: "It has been proven by medical authorities that nearly half of all sickness starts in the colon . . . when the colon is kept clean, disease in the body is very rare." After this the dieter might choose their Trim Fast pills, Herbal Food Combination Weight Loss Formula #59, Dieter's Delight Herbal Tea, or Good-Bye Cellulite.
Detoxification Relief is marketed by Home Health of Virginia Beach, Va. It helps you stop harmful effects from "overindulgence," or from tobacco, alcohol and pollution.
Dr. Clayton's Natural Program for Weight Control combines three kinds of pills, two for cleansing and one for weight loss. Blood Cleanser is claimed to "detoxify the blood and tissues," and the Herba-Clenz is for "cleansing and healing the bowel."
The detoxification theory can enable con artists to gain great power over their customers by diagnosing and curing "potentially fatal" (but nonexistent) illnesses. "They have to invent the idea of toxins," says Peter Fodor, president of the Lipoplasty Society of North America, "because that gives them something to pretend they can fix."
It can be terrifying to believe that one's body is being poisoned by toxins from within. But if this were true, the human race would not have survived, says Vincent F. Cordaro, M.D., an FDA medical officer. "A person who retained wastes and toxins would be very ill and could die if not treated. The whole concept is irrational and unscientific."

Detoxification Under Anesthesia -- A Drug To Replace A Drug!

ANESTHESIA DETOX The Treatment |
|
| The anesthesia procedure condenses what has historically been weeks of withdrawal misery from traditional methods into approximately six hours of detoxification under general anesthesia. While asleep, the patient is given Naltrexone, a drug which supplants the narcotics from the receptor sites in the brain and nervous system, thereby ending the addiction. Because of the anesthesia, the patient experiences almost none of the pain normally associated with eliminating narcotics from the system. The patient awakens physiologically drug-free, then remains under the supervision and observation of a physician and/or nurse until the following day. |

The treatment of patients who are under the influence of, or experiencing withdrawal from, substance-related disorders requires an understanding of the natural history and variants of such syndromes; a complete assessment of the patient's individual medical, psychiatric, and social issues; and a knowledge of the uses and limitations of a variety of interventions, including--but not limited to--pharmacotherapies. Memorization of protocols will not serve as well as a full appreciation of the basic and clinical science of Addiction Medicine. All therapies must be individualized to specific patients' needs and adjusted appropriately to their response to treatment.

By Ted H Spence, DDS, ND, PhD/DSc, MPH
Introduction:
Detoxification comes in many forms and refers to many different programs that cleanse the body of toxins. Today, our environment is toxic and the foods we eat, even the air we breathe and the water we drink is laden with chemicals foreign to our system. Therefore, everyone is undergoing some type of detoxification to maintain life and health. Although basic detoxification begins with diet, detox programs may include nutritional fortification for the liver, lungs, kidneys, bowels and blood. We will soon see why these organs are so important in detoxification. Detoxification for the body may refer to the cleansing of the bowels, kidneys, lungs, the liver or the blood, since these are the organs involved in detoxification of chemicals and toxins from the body. The liver acts as an “in-line” filter for the removal of foreign substances and wastes from the blood. The kidneys filter wastes from the blood into the urine, while the lungs remove volatile gases as we breathe.

Outpatient detoxification of patients with alcohol or other drug addiction is being increasingly undertaken. This type of management is appropriate for patients in stage I or stage II of withdrawal who have no significant comorbid conditions and have a support person willing to monitor their progress. Adequate dosages of appropriate substitute medications are important for successful detoxification. In addition, comorbid psychiatric, personality and medical disorders must be managed, and social and environmental concerns need to be addressed. By providing supportive, nonjudgmental, yet assertive care, the family physician can facilitate the best possible chance for a patient's successful recovery. (Am Fam Physician 1999;60:1175-83.)

Niacin
Multiple deficiencies of B vitamins and protein often occur together; therefore, a balanced diet is needed. Supplemental niacinamide 300 to 1000 mg/day should be given orally in divided doses. In most cases, 300 to 500 mg is sufficient.
Niacinamide is generally used to treat deficiency states, because niacin can cause flushing, itching, burning, or tingling sensations, whereas niacinamide does not; however, niacinamide does not possess hypolipidemic or vasodilating properties as does niacin.
When oral therapy is precluded because of diarrhea or lack of patient cooperation, 100 to 250 mg should be injected sc bid to tid. In encephalopathic states, 1000 mg po plus 100 to 250 mg IM is recommended. Other B-complex vitamins should also be given in therapeutic dosages.

Niacin has been studied for its cardiovascular benefits in about a half-dozen major clinical trials. The primary cardiovascular measures such as cholesterol and triglyceride levels, heart attacks and strokes are all significantly reduced with niacin therapy (sometimes used alone and sometimes used along with other drug therapy). Overall, the use of niacin (nicotinic acid, but not niacinamide) to prevent or treat elevated blood lipids and reduce cardiovascular disease risk is well substantiated. In a large number of clinical trials, nicotinic acid has been shown to consistently lower total and LDL (“bad”) cholesterol (by about 15-20%) and triglycerides (by 10-25%), while increasing levels of HDL (“good”) cholesterol (by 15-25%). The down-side is that the amount of niacin needed to lower cholesterol levels also tends to result in “niacin intolerance” in 15-40% of people who try it and the unpleasant side effect of “skin-flushing” (similar to hot flashes) as well as the serious risk of liver damage (see Safety considerations below).

How Does Niacin Work?
Niacin, but not niacinamide, lowers
cholesterol levels even though both forms of Vitamin B3
are anti pellagra and are almost equally effective in
treating schizophrenia and arthritis and a number of
other diseases. Niacin- also differs from niacinamide
because it causes a flush to which people adapt readily
while niacinamide has no vasodilation activity in 99
percent of people who take it. For reasons unknown, about
I in 100 persons who take niacinamide do flush. They must
be able to convert niacinamide to niacin in their bodies
at a very rapid pace. There must be a clue here
somewhere. It is believed that niacin causes a flush by a
complicated mechanism which releases histamine,
interferes in prostaglandin metabolism, may be related to
serotonin mechanism and may involve the cholinergic
system, Rohte, Thormahlen and Ochlich (1977). Histamine
is clearly involved. The typical niacin flush is
identical with the flush produced by an injection of
histamine. It is dampened down if not prevented entirely
by anti-histamines and by tranquilizers. The adaptation
to niacin is readily explained by the reduction in
histamine in the storage sites such as the mast cells.
When these are examined after a dose of histamine, these
cells contain empty vesicles which contained the
histamine and also heparinoids. If the next dose is
spaced closely enough there will have been no time for
the storage sites to be refilled and therefore less
histamine will be available to be released.
[Karl Note: Obviously this doctor has never witnessed the continuing vasodilation, using Niacin over many days, when the dosage is carefully increased every time the flush stops.]
After there is complete adaptation
to niacin a rest of several days will start the flushing
cycle again. This decrease in histamine has some
advantage in reducing the effects of rapidly released
histamine. Dr. Ed Boyle found that guinea pigs treated
with niacin were not harmed by anaphylactic shock.
Because the flush is relatively transient it can not be
involved in the lowering of cholesterol which remains in
effect as long as medication is continued. Prostaglandins
appear to be involved. Thus, aspirin, Kunin (1976), and
indomethacin, Kaijser, Eklund, Olsson and Carlson (1979)
reduce the intensity of the flush, Estep, Gray and
Rappolt (1977).
